Kansas provides the public and prospective entrepreneurs the option to search for information about all businesses in the state. The search can be done in a matter of minutes, so if you want learn the steps involved, here is our guide for all the search methods:
Kansas Business Entity Search Station
To search for a certain business in the state, users need to utilize Kansas’ Business Entity Search Station (BESS) [1]. To access the search portals, select ‘Business Entity Database Search.’
On this page, you will find several search options which are: business entity name, ID number, keyword, resident agent’s full name, and resident agent’s name/keyword. Based on the details you have, choose a search option and follow the steps our team outlined below:
On the other hand, if you want to find out the availability of a preferred name for your prospective business, you may select the Name Availability check on BESS.
Search by Name
Step 1
Open Kansas’ Business Entity Search Station (BESS), and click ‘Business Entity Database’ to open the search option by name. Once you’re there, select “By Business Entity Name.”

Step 2
On the Business Entity Search page, enter the name of the business on the blank field. Hit the search button to proceed.

Step 3
The next page will display a list of results not more than 400 names. These name results generated are based on the information you provided earlier.
Scroll through the list or use the Find option on your browser to search for a particular name. Once you found the business of your interest, click the “View Record” bar located on the left-most column in order to access the business summary page.

Step 4
You are now on the business summary page where can review all the extensive details of the business. Such information are the business registered agent, annual reports, and more.

You can also view their filing history, and purchase Certificate of Good Standing from links on the page.
Search by Entity ID Number
Step 1
Using the entity ID number search is the most convenient method since it will directly lead you to a single business entity. The reason behind this is that every business is endowed with a unique ID number when they are registered in the state.
To begin, open the Kansas BESS and select Business Entity Database. From the list, choose “By Business Entity ID” as the method.

Step 2
Enter the entity ID number on the designated field. Double-check all the digits to ensure you generate an accurate result.

Step 3
If you entered a correct ID number, you will be directed to a business summary page. On this page, you can review and access all the corresponding details of that business.

The page will also allow you to perform multiple functions as well, such as changing the file name online, updating the current mail address, closing your business, and updating the resident office.
These sets of information and functions are provided by the Secretary of State.
Search by Keyword
Step 1
On the same page linked on the first method, select “Business Entity Details” then select “By a Keyword” on the next page.

Step 2
Enter the keyword on the designated field, click search to continue. Be patient while waiting for the results as it may take up at least 60 seconds.

Step 3
After the results based on your keyword have been loaded, scroll through the list until you have reached the business entity in question. Click “View Record” to access the business summary page.

Step 4
You have now reached the business summary page where all the details are provided. Click on the provided links on the page to do some changes or updates.

Search by Registered Agent’s Name/Keyword
Step 1
Similar to the previous search methods, access the Kansas BESS to commence a search.
Choose Business Entity Database. On the succeeding page, choose “By a Resident’s Agent Name; Keyword.”

Step 2
On this new page, enter the agent’s name on the blank designated field. We highly recommend checking if you encoded the correct information for accurate results.
Click the search button to proceed.

Step 3
A list of business entity names will appear on the results page based on the information you entered.
Scroll through the list and select a business name. Select the “View Record” button to access the business summary page.

Step 4
You now have gained access to the business summary page. Here, you can review all the extensive details about a particular business.
These recorded files and information are published by the Kansas State Secretary.

Search by Name Availability
Step 1
On Kansas’ BESS, select “Name Availability.” You will be directed to the Business Filing Center. To proceed, select the Name Availability heading on the page.

Step 2
On the search portal, enter your preferred business name on the blank search bar. Hit “Search” to proceed.

Step 3
If the desired entity name is available, the result should be similar to the photo below.
The page will also allow you to reserve the name and file a formation document for the particular entity name.

However, if the desired entity name is not available, it will show you a result similar to this:
